Several cases of the District Police receiving bribes in the last few years have been reported. Despite the public complaining about bribery existing among some police officers, the lack of proper action against them has served to agitate the public. In this regard, the newly-appointed Superintendent of Police of Coimbatore District, Sujith Kumar has advised officials to completely stop the sale of the banned lotteries and other illegal activities within the police fraternity. "To accept or give bribe is a crime," he stressed. The SP also cited that strict action would be taken against officials involved in bribe.
Meanwhile, a few months back, it was reported that Chief Inspectors Suresh and Palanisamy had nabbed couples who were talking by the wayside at Periyanaickenpalayam. The police duo allegedly demanded a bribe sum of Rs 10,000 to let the couples go free. The couple reluctantly paid the bribe and left the spot. However, they later complained about the incident to the SP who took the policemen to task. Chief Inspector Suresh was suspended and Palanisamy was transferred to the armed forces by the SP.
Regarding the same, Sujith Kumar said that strict action will be imposed on policemen demanding bribes in Coimbatore District. He also assured that he will do the needful if he receives complaints against district police who demanded bribes. "Two policemen who were involved in bribery have been taken to task yesterday and we urged higher officials to take necessary action against policemen working under them, if caught in any bribery act. These strict continuous action can prevent bribery," reiterated the Superintendent of Police.
